GOD is PERFECT
(Pastor Terry L.
Reese; Valley GBC; 11/01/20)
None of us
are perfect, or capable of perfection in this life (Matt. 19:16-26)—but God
(Matt. 5:48, 19:17) & Christ (8:46) are perfect!
I. Biblical Affirmation of the
Concept.
a.
God’s work is perfect (Deut.
32:3-4).
b.
God’s knowledge is perfect (Job
37:16)
c.
God’s way is perfect (Ps.
18:30).
d.
God’s law is perfect (Ps.
19:7).
e.
God’s will is perfect (Rom.
12:2).
f.
God’s gifts are perfect
(James 1:17).
g.
God is perfect (Matt. 5:48)!
2. The Meaning of Divine Perfection.
Both
the Greek (teleios) & Hebrew (tamiym) terms have the same sense:
namely, that which has full integrity to it; that which is complete, sound;
that which is perfect, whole, entire, wanting nothing; that which is without spot

“To
say that God is perfect means He is complete—nothing lacking. He is all that
God ought to be—falls short in nothing.”—Alva
J. McClain
James 1:4: “And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you
may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
3. Perfection is a qualifying
attribute.
This
attribute serves as a qualifier to
God’s other attributes. Everything God does, knows, etc., He does perfectly.
4. Practical values associated with
the Doctrine.
a. Because God is perfect, His works are
perfect (Gen.
1:31).
b. Because God is perfect, all we need
is found in Him (Col.
2:10).
c. God’s perfection is the basis of our
security and assurance.
What
if His power, knowledge, grace, and goodness were lacking or defective? Could
we then trust in Him for salvation?
5. Our life’s charge and goal…
Matt. 5:48: "Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly
Father is perfect.
Perfection is our hope and our goal; we are
not to be satisfied with less—even though sinless perfection is not attainable
within this earthly life. But we continue the pursuit…
