Sermon Notes (10/18/21): "A Serpent Again Loosed in Paradise"

A Serpent Again Loosed in Paradise

(Pastor Terry Reese; Valley GBC of Armagh, PA; 10/17/21)

TEXT: Rev. 20:1-3, 7-10.

I. Why care about a war (Rev. 20:7-10) that will be fought at least 1,007 years from now?

A.    This has much to say about human nature, about the human condition, the limits to human achievement, and the utopian “isms” of today

B.    This also marks the end of one world and the beginning of another…

C.    The Eternal State is our goal—how we get there should interest us!

D.    The Millennium is the vestibule to Eternity, or the First Fruits of the Eternal State.

II. Consider life in the Millennium…

A.    Two basic companies will inhabit it: 1) the Glorified saints who were raptured prior to Trib, and 2) those saved during the Trib, who enter the Millennium in corruptible mortal flesh, and their children born during the Millennium…

B.    Perfect government, no religious deception, perfect education, perfect climate, perfect health… Incredible longevity (Isa. 65:20), prosperity, productivity… Everything Man has long claimed that he wants!

C.    A perfect relationship between men and animals!

D.    The Devil bound for 1,000 years… No Flip Wilson-like “‘Da Devil made me do it!”

Rev 20:2-3 ESV  And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while.

No access to humanity whatsoever! Locked in the Abyss!

2Pet. 2:4:  For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but threw them into the lowest hell and imprisoned them in chains of deepest darkness, holding them for judgment…

Jude 6: You also know that the angels who did not keep within their proper domain but abandoned their own place of residence, he has kept in eternal chains in utter darkness, locked up for the judgment of the great Day.

III. But one thing will not be perfect—the remaining sin nature within the citizenry!

A.    Man doesn’t need Satan to sin. Man also does not need to be taught how to sin.

B.    The sin nature inherited from Adam is universal

Rom 3:9-12 ESV  What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

Rom 3:23 ESV  for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…

C.    Even regenerate, Born Again believers are appointed to  struggle with the Old Nature, until such time as it pleases God to summon us into His Presence and Glorify us…

Rom 7:22-24 ESV  For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?

Rom 7:15 ESV  For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

1Cor 10:12 ESV  Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall.

1 Pet. 5:8: Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

1 John 1:8:If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

D.    There WILL be transgressions during the Millennium, as evidenced by the below:

1. Premature death…

Isa. 65:20: "No longer will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his days; for the youth will die at the age of one hundred and the one who does not reach the age of one hundred will be thought accursed.”

2. Judgment upon various millennial nations…

Zech. 14:16-19: Then it will come about that any who are left of all the nations that went against Jerusalem will go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to celebrate the Feast of Booths. And it will be that whichever of the families of the earth does not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, there will be no rain on them. If the family of Egypt does not go up or enter, then no rain will fall on them; it will be the plague with which the LORD smites the nations who do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Booths. This will be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all the nations who do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Booths.

E.    This is the exercise of the Rod of Iron! Transgressions will be dealt with swiftly, justly, efficiently!

Ps. 2:9: 'Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, and the very ends of the earth as Your possession. 'You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware.'"

Rev. 2:26-27: “The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father.”

Rev. 12:5:  And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron; and her child was caught up to God and to His throne.

Rev. 19:15: From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.

IV. Yet, millions will conform to the Lord Jesus' statutes outwardly—but inwardly, they will hate Him!

Rev. 20:7-9a: 7When the thousand years are completed, Satan will be released from his prison,

8and will come out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together for the war; the number of them is like the sand of the seashore.

9And they came up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city…

A.    Shocking! Millions--or perhaps Billions--of unregenerate rebels! They are "like sands of the seashore!"

B.    Good laws, wonderful environment, wealth, etc., cannot guarantee good character--or a love for God.

C.    Even the direct Presence of Christ will not change hearts! (John 11:53; Luke 16:31, Matt. 12:24).

D.    Children raised in the church sometimes end-up apostates (despite the general truism of Prov. 22:6), when no longer under mom and dad’s authority.

E.    We do our best as parents—but salvation is of the LORD. Only GOD can affect the New Birth and replace a heart of stone with a heart of flesh! Efficacious grace!

John 6:44: "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.”

F.    Total Depravity as a doctrine is thus vindicated!

Jer. 17:9: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is incurable; who can know it?”

1Cor 2:14: But a natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he is not able to know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Eph. 2:1-3: And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

G.   The children of the Millennium will not ride to Heaven on their regenerate parent’s coattails!

John 1:12-13 LITV  But as many as received Him, to them He gave authority to become children of God, to the ones believing into His name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but were born of God.

Matt 3:9 LITV  And do not think to say within yourselves, We have a father, Abraham. For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

V. Human perfectibility by natural means is ERROR!

A.    Proper education, housing, environment, scientific achievements, psychotherapies, political & social structures, etc., won’t bring us a perfect, or God-loving, person!

B.    Reform by natural means: Social reform, good laws, rehabilitation programs—i.e., doing good things—is good, and may even be helpful in altering outward behaviors… but these things won’t give us a new heart, and they certainly won’t eradicate the sin nature!

C.    What are the ISMS of our time all about? Answer: attempting to achieve Utopia by natural, humanistic means.

All such schemes have failed in the past—but we do not learn from history!

John 12:8: For the poor you always have with you…

THE LIE: The Myth of Progress & evolutionary human development (first touted by the Serpent in Gen. 3:5)! Progressive human development! Realizing our innate human potential!

2Thess. 2:11-12: For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.

D.    The shocking nature of Millennial Rebellion is the FINAL PROOF that Man is incapable of removing the curse of sin through his own natural means!

VI. The details of the Final Rebellion—the Long War against God.

A. The Return of Satan.

1. A thousand years in the Abyss has not changed him (vv. 7-8)! Incorrigible!

2. A deceiver of the nations (v. 3, 8)—the unique, unseen creator of fellowships of evil…

a. Still controlling world governments (note territorial-demonic control of various nations in Dan. 10:13, 20-21)…

b. Still craving sovereignty… As Calvin Miller observes, never does a Serpent crawl so low that he does not dream of wearing a crown (A Requiem for Love).

Isa. 14:14: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’

Matt. 4:9: And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”

c. Still employing DECEPTION as his principal weapon! The battle is fought in the arena of our MINDS!

John 8:44 ESV  You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

3. A Serpent is once again loosed in Eden—but one who ultimately serves God’s higher sovereign purposes.

B. The Army of Rebellion.

1. The sheer numbers of rebels—again, shocking!

2. Their very existence refutes a post-Tribulation Rapture. Where do unbelievers come from, if not from parents saved during the Tribulation who survive the Sheep & the Goat Judgment (Matt. 25) and then enter the Kingdom in a state of mortality--and who are thus are able to procreate unregenerates?

3. Their identification with Gog & Magog: NOT the Gog/Magog of Ezek. 38-39.

These terms will become ensigns of evil, much like the term “Babylon.”

4. Culminates in final siege against Jerusalem and the saints (v. 9)…

“And they came up on the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city…”

a. Jerusalem is the Beloved City (Ps. 87:2)…

Ps. 87:2 KJV: The LORD loveth the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob.

b. They hate the King and the People with which He identifies…

John 15:18-20 ESV  “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.

c. Their mission: one of madness! Man seeks “perfection”—yet rebels against the

PERFECT Government! Man claims to desire a perfect government, a perfect economic system, a perfect justice system, a perfect educational system, etc., but when God actually gives him these things, REJECTS them!

Even today, men are offered a perfect Savior, a perfect Salvation, and a perfect roadmap for the life (i.e., the perfect Word)--and still they say "NO!"

What does Man really want? Answer: his SIN!

5. Their destruction is swift, sudden, terrible, and complete.

v. 9: “…and fire came down from heaven and devoured them.”

They are destroyed directly by God’s hand, like Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 19:24), or like Gog & Magog of old--1,000 years earlier--on the mountains of Israel (Ezek. 38-39).

C. The Aftermath.

1. Satan’s final fall and sealed destiny (v. 10).

2. The parallel passage of 2 Peter 3: the atomic disintegration of the Universe!

v. 7: But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

v. 10: But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.

3. The Great White Throne Judgment (Rev. 20:11-15).

4. The birth of a New World (Rev. 21-22).

VII. Conclusion: God is our only Savior!

Politically, socially, materially, spiritually… in every way...

Man cannot, by whatever natural means, vanquish sin; apart from the direct supernatural activity of God, there is no hope for the eradication of sin!

Man fails his final Dispensational Test!

From this we see that the "Millennial Dispensation," like all the six Dispensations before it, will end in failure. God will have tested man in "Innocence," under "Conscience," under "Self-Government," under the "Headship of the Family," under "Law," under "Grace," and finally under the influence of the "Holy Spirit," free from Satanic influences, and under them all he will prove himself to be hopelessly, incurably and incorrigibly bad.—Larkin

Bulletin, 10/18/21: "SATAN: A Brief History of his Downfall"

SATAN:

A Brief History of His Downfall

(Pastor Terry L. Reese, Valley GBC, Armagh, PA)

Though enormously and tragically successful in certain respects, the general course of Satan’s lengthy career since the inception of his initial rebellion against God has long been on a progressively downward spiral, leading ultimately to total devastation and ruin. The distinct and formal stages of this downfall can be enumerated as follows:

  1. The angel Lucifer’s initial fall from his original, exalted position as an anointed cherub, when iniquity and pride self-generated from within his heart (Ezek. 28:15-19, Isa. 14:12-14).

  1. After the Fall of Man in Eden, Satan’s ultimate downfall through the atoning work of Christ was first proclaimed in Gen. 3:15 (a.k.a., the Protoevangelium, or first presentation of the Gospel; cf. Rom. 16:20).

  1. Through the Cross, Christ broke the power of Death which Satan wielded over us (Heb. 2:14), rendering him defenseless with regard to the Christian’s destiny.

  1. During the middle of Tribulation Week, he will be cast down to Earth by Michael and the heavenly hosts, barring his access to the Heavenlies (Rev. 12:7-12).

  1. Following our Lord’s Second Coming when He takes possession of His Kingdom, Satan will be bound and confined to the Abyss for 1,000 years (Rev. 20:1-3).

  1. Following his brief release, in which he will follow his familiar pattern of causing men to form a Fellowship of Evil (thereby inciting the nations unto the great global rebellion of Rev. 20:7-9), he will be cast into the Lake of Fire, where he will be tormented forever and ever (Rev. 20:10), meeting his final, appalling destiny.

Ezek. 28:19: "All who know you among the peoples are appalled at you; you have become terrified and you will cease to be forever."

Bulletin Insert (9/26/21): The Third Temple

Scriptures relating to the Third Temple

By Pastor Terry L. Reese, Valley GBC of Armagh, PA; 9/25/2021

The rebuilding of the Temple is NO MYTH! Various detailed Biblical prophecies speak concerning the rebuilding of the Third Jewish Temple (i.e., the “Tribulation Temple”), which will be standing in Jerusalem on the Temple Mount during the future Seven Year Tribulation Period (after the Rapture of God’s Church), and which will be defiled by the Antichrist. This event was forshadowed by such past events as the defilement of the Second Temple by Antiochus IV Epihanes (2nd Cent. BC), who sacrified a pig on the Altar and placed a statue of Zeus in the Holy Place (cf., Dan. 8:11-3; 11:31).; and the later defilement of Mt. Moriah by the Roman Emperor Hadrian (AD 117-38), who built a Temple to Jupiter there, erecting a statue of himself where the Holy Place once stood.

Dan. 9:27: “And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”

Dan. 12:11: “And from the time that the regular burnt offering is taken away and the abomination that makes desolate is set up, there shall be 1,290 days.”

2 Thess. 2:3-4:  “Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.”

Matt. 24:15-16: "Therefore when you see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (whoever reads, let him understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.”

Rev. 11:1-2: “Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, ‘Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.’”

Rev. 13:15: “And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain.”

A Sign-Miracle Confirmed! (Dan. 3:26-30)

v. 26a: Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the door of the furnace…

o   A reference to the large ground level opening.

v. 26b: "…come out, you servants of the Most High God, and come here!"

o   The fire of his fury thus abated, Nebuchadnezzar, under the control of the Sovereign Hand of God, is compelled by events to set aside his own political/religious agenda and openly acknowledge things that were contrary to his own unregenerate heart and self-centered purposes.

o   The Three had professed to be “servants” of the Most High (v. 17)—and indeed, they were now recognized as such by their very oppressor!

o   The King recognizes the God of Israel as a “God of gods,” supremely standing above all others (reverting to the form of Dan. 2:47, from which he had lapsed)— though he does not expressly nor formally deny the existence of other deities.

o   Calvin, on Dan. 3:26: the temporary & vanishing “conversion” of the reprobate.

“We cannot take too diligent notice of examples of this kind, as many estimate the characters of others from a single action. But the worst despisers of God can submit to him for a short time, not merely by feigning to do so before men, but in real seriousness, since God compels them by his power, but meanwhile they retain their pride and ferocity within their breasts. Of this kind, then, was the conversion of King Nebuchadnezzar. For when astonished by the miracle, he could no longer resist the Almighty, he was still inconsistent, as we shall afterwards see. We may also notice how the impious, who are unregenerate by God’s Spirit, are often impelled to worship God; but this is only temporary, and this equable tenor never remains through their whole life. But when God renews his own, he undertakes to govern them even to the end; he animates them to perseverance, and confirms them by his Spirit.”

o   This is yet another example demonstrating that the reprobate can be temporarily made to fear—but this is not synonymous with the lasting conversion characteristic of genuine saving faith (cf., 1 John 2:19; 2 Pet. 2:22).

Acts 24:24-25: But some days later Felix arrived with Drusilla, his wife who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. But as he was discussing righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix became frightened and said, "Go away for the present, and when I find time I will summon you."

Ex. 10:16-20: Then Pharaoh hurriedly called for Moses and Aaron, and he said, "I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you. Now therefore, please forgive my sin only this once, and make supplication to the LORD your God, that He would only remove this death from me." He went out from Pharaoh and made supplication to the LORD. So the LORD shifted the wind to a very strong west wind which took up the locusts and drove them into the Red Sea; not one locust was left in all the territory of Egypt. But the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, and he did not let the sons of Israel go.

v. 26c: Then Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego came out of the midst of the fire.

o   The young men are content to remain in the furnace until commanded to depart! Some observations:

o   Better to be in the midst of a blazing furnace with the Lord than to remain in a palace without Him!

o   In submission to authority, they obey the King’s command to emerge.

o   Like Noah, they do not “come out” (Gen. 8:16) until the appropriately designated, specially appointed moment.

v. 27a: “The satraps…and the king's high officials gathered around and saw…”

o   These lofty pagan dignitaries—"hostile witnesses”—would now serve a Sovereign Living God as reliable & confirming eyewitnesses unto the legitimacy of the sign-miracle!

v. 27b: “…the fire had no effect…”

o   The young men subjected to proper “scientific investigation.”

o   Their deliverance was COMPLETE & TOTAL! Note these four indicators:

1.    “the fire had no effect on the bodies of these men…”

2.    “nor was the hair of their head singed…”

3.    “nor were their trousers damaged…”

4.    “nor had the smell of fire even come upon them.”

o   When genuine, supernaturally-directed sign-miracles are involved, God’s deliverance is not partial, but total, perfect, complete, and abundantly self-evident (cf., Whitcomb’s EBC Commentary on Dan. 3:27).

o   Not one Israelite perished in the Red Sea during the Exodus, and not one Egyptian escaped (Ex. 14:28-29)!

o   Not one Assyrian escaped the wrath of the Angel of the LORD in the Days of Hezekiah (2 Kings 19:35)!

o   When Christ healed individuals, it was a complete healing!

o   Contrast His miraculous healings with the staged “healings” of so many highly promoted charlatans found within today’s Charismatic movement.*

o   Likewise, we can be assured that our Redemption that our Lord wrought at Calvary on our behalf is complete (John 19:30; Heb. 10:1-14)!

v. 28a: Nebuchadnezzar responded and said, "Blessed be the God…”

o   Nebuchadnezzar openly blesses the God of Israel!

o   Nebuchadnezzar publicly declares the greatness of the deliverance!

o   The king praises the young men for fearlessly & sacrificially trusting in their God!

o   The Head of Gold—the living essence of royal absolutism—praises the young men for violating his own command!

o   The instigator of this attempt to fuse religious idolatry with an all-powerful world-state praises the young men for rejecting the king’s gods!

o   A pagan polytheist praises the Jews for their religious exclusivism!

v. 29a: "Therefore I make a decree…”

o   The earlier destructive decree is now set aside, yielding to a new decree favorable to the Jews.

o   The power of the Head of Gold in having absolute authority over his laws stands in marked contrast to that of the rulers of the succeeding Silver (i.e., Persian) Kingdom (cf., Dan. 6:8, 12, 15; Esth. 1:19).

o   The second decree marks a dramatic volte-face from the earlier decree imposing a one-world religion!

o   The empire-wide impact of this favorable decree must have been enormous with regard to its significance upon Jewish life in a variety of ways.

v. 29b: “the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego”

o   The King respects the God of the Three Holy Children as their God—but fails to appropriate Him as his own!

v. 29c: “…shall be torn limb from limb and their houses reduced to a rubbish heap”

o   Echoes the threat against the Chaldeans in 2:5.

v. 29d: “…inasmuch as there is no other god who is able to deliver in this way."

o   The most powerful man in the world publicly testifies as to the unique power of the God of Israel!

o   A recognition by Nebuchadnezzar of the matchless power of the superiority of YHWH—but again, no affirmation that He is the ONE and ONLY True God.

o   Still, this statement perhaps represents a progressive advance in Nebuchadnezzar’s understanding of the power of the God of Israel. Earlier (2:47), he had acknowledged Israel’s God as “a revealer of mysteries.”

v. 30: Then the king caused Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego to prosper [or, promoted] in the province of Babylon.

o   The offices of the three faithful men are restored, and additional honors are bestowed upon them!

o   The schemes of the wicked Chaldeans (3:8-12) thus backfire in their faces (cf., Dan. 6:24)—even as the scheming Haman would later be forced to eventually honor his great enemy, Mordecai the Jew (Esth. 6) and would ultimately be hanged on the gallows of his own creation (Esth. 5:14; 7:9-10)!

Ps. 21:11 Though they plan evil against you, though they devise mischief, they will not succeed.

Ps. 37:1-4 Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers! For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb. Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.

Job 5:13 He catches the wise in their own craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end.

Ps. 141:10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass by safely.

Prov. 12:13 An evil man is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, but the righteous escapes from trouble.

APPLICATION: How easy it is to compromise when the entire world is shouting “UNITY!” But what great blessings await those who are willing to stand against the entire world in the Name of TRUTH!

An Application from Church History:

ATHANASIUS CONTRA MUNDUM

John 8:24: “for unless you believe that I AM, you will die in your sins."

Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, was an unswerving opponent of the heretical but influential Arian Party within the Church of the 4th Century. The Arians denied the Triunity of God and full deity of Christ, affirming that Christ was a lesser, created demigod (much like the Jehovah’s Witnesses cult of our own day). Athanasius refused to accept Arianism as a legitimate expression of Christianity, and thus refused to acknowledge supporters of the Arian Party as brothers in Christ and members the Communion of the Faithful.

The Imperial pressure against Athanasius to receive the Arians as legitimate brethren was enormous, as Rome’s newly Christianized government desired peace and outward unity amongst nominal “Christians.” For this reason, Athanasius was sent into exile no less than five times for tenaciously clinging to principles of ecclesiastical separation with reference to what Imperial authorities no doubt regarded as impractical, inconvenient, and insignificant matters of personal theological conviction.

Athanasius was reviled as hard-headed, fanatical, stubborn, and unreasonable by the unity-seeking Imperial authorities of his day, and was viewed as a man who stood “against the entire world.” Yet for this very reason, he is honored today by Bible believing Christians as a man who rightly perceived that entire Gospel turns upon this very matter of the full Deity of Christ and the Triunity of God. He is therefore remembered forever in the hearts of the Faithful as Athanasius Contra Mundum:

“ATHANASIUS AGAINST THE WORLD!”

* “And the types of miracles that are being claimed today are absolutely nothing like New Testament miracles; absolutely nothing like them. In fact, the types of miracles today could be distinctly seen as different than New Testament miracles. Jesus and the apostles instantly and completely healed people born blind, a paralytic, a man with a withered arm - all obvious, indisputable miracles. Even Jesus’ enemies didn’t challenge the reality of His miracles, and He had the people there to verify them. He raised the dead, of course, as we well know.”

“They never did a miracle that was slow, they never did a miracle that took time, they never did a miracle that was less than permanent. By contrast, most modern miracles are partial, gradual, temporary, sometimes reversed, and almost impossible to verify. And the only instant miracles today seem to be those that deal with psychosomatic diseases; people with visible disabilities are rarely, if ever, helped at all by modern faith healers. I recently watched a televangelist interview a man he had supposedly healed of lameness. The man said he was free from his wheelchair for the first time in several years; however, the man was walking with crutches and had heavy braces on his legs.”—Dr. John MacArthur; Does God Do Miracles Today? https://www.gty.org/library/sermons-library/90-56
